DNS changes (again) this weekend

April 25, 2009

With sincere apologies, we regret that this weekend will mark still another move of DNS addresses on our network. The outage will be very short and the overall impact will be minimal. Only a handful of websites will see any change in service. In the worst-case scenario, a visitor might find a site on our network unavailable for an hour. Given the hour at night this change will take place, we’re confident nobody will be impacted.

The change will be carried out on Saturday, April 26th sometime between 10:00pm and 12:00am (mountain time zone).

Mac Users: If you find that your site seems to no longer work after this change has taken place, please flush the DNS cache on your Mac workstation. OS X caches addressing information and it sometimes causes problems when IP addresses change.

To fix this, please start a command-line window and then type “dscacheutil -flushcache”, pressing enter. You should then be able to navigate to your site as expected. If using a version older than OS X 10.5.1, the command to use is “lookupd -flushcache” to accomplish the same DNS cache flush.

bash-2.05a$ dscacheutil -flushcache
bash-2.05a$ lookupd -flushcache
